The Godfather Live in Concert

23 April @ 19:00 - 23:00

Noordpool Orkest conducted by Timothy Henty

Program Info:
Nino Rota – The Godfather

To mark the 50th anniversary of Francis Ford Coppola’s masterpiece, there will be one more screening on the big screen, with a live performance of Nino Rota’s iconic soundtrack by the Noordpool Orchestra.

The three Oscars and countless other awards winning classic The Godfather is one of the most iconic masterpieces in the history of cinema. In 2022, it will be 50 years since Francis Ford Coppola’s film premiered, and to mark the occasion, the film will be screened with musical accompaniment by a full orchestra. The iconic soundtrack by Nino Rota gives every reason to do so. The way the combination of traditional Italian folk music and jazz gives the film its atmosphere, the music is perhaps as important to the film as the story.

“We are proud to be able to bring these masterful compositions and the film to the Benelux in this unique way,” said Justin Freer, producer of The Godfather LIVE. “That we can breathe new life into this beloved film music in this way, adding something to the history of film music, is as exciting as it is humbling.”

The Godfather, released by Paramount Pictures in 1972, tells the story of crime family Corleone and their rivalry with other New York crime families in post-World War II America. A period in which the head of the family Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) hands over his crime empire to his youngest son Michael (Al Pacino). Also starring James Caan, John Cazale, Robert Duvall and Diane Keaton, the film established director Coppola’s reputation and won numerous film awards, including the Oscars for ‘best film’ and ‘best actor’ (Marlon Brando). Various media (including Empire, Entertainment Weekly and Metacritic) have already declared The Godfather the ‘best film of all time’.

Composer Nino Rota gained international fame in the 1950s and 1960s through his work with and for Italian directors Federico Fellini and Luchino Visconti. He provided the soundtracks for White Nights, The Leopard, La Dolce Vita and 8 ½, among others. In a list of the ‘best film music of all time’ by the American Film Institute, his work for The Godfather, including the immortal ‘Love Theme from The Godfather’, ranked fifth.

“There are few film scores as instantly recognisable as Nina Rota’s trumpet-played opening segment of The Godfather. Only a handful of films are as masterfully made as this one. The audiovisual marriage of the two masterpieces of film and music will be an experience unlike any other.
